Growing up in the 1980s, watching Newfoundland’s name on TV was always funny. You were shocked when it happened, but there was also a huge sense of pride when the lovely scraggly rock we proudly call home was mentioned on top American TV shows.
A lot has changed in 40 years, and with our growing film industry, which has seen Global, Disney, Apple TV, Amazon Prime programs, and more films here, our industry continues to evolve.
This season, Newfoundland will be showcased in one of Canada’s top-rated programs, Son of a Critch, a new CBC drama, Saint Pierre and the 7th season of the Citytv drama Hudson and Rex. And if that wasn't enough, the second season of Severance Season 2 will debut tomorrow night, and Reacher on February 20th.
Back in May 2023, the picturesque towns of Bonavista, Keels, and Port Union, Newfoundland, played host to filming the second season of the Apple TV+ series Severance. The critically acclaimed workplace thriller, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette, was filmed for 18 days in these charming locations, selected for their unique appeal.
Over the years, the star-studded cast has included Emmy Award nominee Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, Emmy Award winner John Turturro, Academy Award winner Christopher Walken, and Academy and Emmy Award winner Patricia Arquette.
The first season of Severance won an AFI Award and earned 14 Emmy Award nominations, and this season promises to excite fans even more.
This past summer, St. John’s residents were surprised to see Reacher’s lead actor, Alan Ritchson, filming season three scenes in the City of Legends. The production transformed parts of the downtown area to resemble Portland, Maine, adding to the show's authentic feel. Filming also took place along the East Coast Trail near Pouch Cove.
The TV show Reacher is a crime thriller series based on Lee Child's popular Jack Reacher novels. It follows the story of Jack Reacher, a former military police investigator who roams the country with nothing but the clothes on his back, a toothbrush, and a fierce sense of justice.
The series is set in various small towns and cities across the United States. Each season introduces new locations and challenges for Reacher as he uncovers mysteries and confronts criminals.
St. John’s was one of the Canadian locations where the program filmed its upcoming season. Filming was also done in Ontario locations, such as Toronto, Caledon, Pickering, Port Perry, and Hamilton.
The third season of Reacher will debut on the Amazon Prime streaming app.
